I look for friends who are honest with themselves, about themselves; who know and can articulate their own needs, desires, and boundaries; who can hear and respect my boundaries; and who understand that they and I are separate and distinct people—that conflicting needs or boundaries don't make either of us bad or wrong, even if they indicate a point where we need to get a relational need met, somewhere else. I want friends who care deeply—I don't need them to invest in all the same things I do, but I'm not into spending time with people who are disengaged, disinterested, and noncommittal about everything. And while it shows up differently in different friendships, it's important to me that we be invested in our own and each other's growth, and be willing to challenge one another when we see something we could be doing better.

It doesn't hurt if they're queer; comfortable having rambling conversations about queer identities and experiences; grounded in theories of identity, privilege, oppression, and intersectionality; and well-read. I also appreciate people who are creatively and aesthetically engaged, and open to new experiences.
